Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences  , The American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences (ASBBS)  , 17/1  , pp. 160-176  , 2008/Spring

概要(Abstract) The traditional lifetime employment system in Japan has failed to accommodate all job seekers in its mainstream and, consequently freeters, part-timers, and other non-regular employment practices, have come into being and increased enormously, threatening the very foundation of the national labor market and human resources management (HRM) system. In view of this situation, using a structured questionnaire survey, this paper examines the type of facilities and support that freeters and part-timers need at the pre-employment, job-search, and post-employment stages, and from employers, management, and other sources to help them secure full-time employment. The paper postulates a schematic framework of training and education that, if applied as envisaged, would elevate their positions to lifetime regular employment.

概要(Abstract) Within the background of constant changes of business environment of Japanse-style management, this paper examines the concurrent and historical features of its eight different aspects, namely ilifetime employment, seniority based wage and promotion, training and education, enterprise union, decision-making, production management, shitauke and keiretsu, and quality control. It then examines how the system has transformed during the post-Second World War period, and with the investment and operation of business activities by Japanese companies in foreign countries. It also finds that the foreign companies operating within Japan have induced Japanese companies to refurbish their indigeneous management practices with elements of management practices in the West. The paper envisages further in-depth studies in all these eight areas and different other areas that are not studied here.
