Journal of Research Institute of Foreign Studies: Global Negotiation: Perspectives on Teaching and Learning  , Kobe City University of Foreign Studies  , 58  , 95-122  , 2018/12/20

概要(Abstract) The theme of this paper, based on a workshop given at Global Negotiation Symposium 2017 @ Japan University English Model United Nations (JUEMUN), is that the areas of speech, drama, debate, and negotiation have much to offer to participants in Model United Nations. Knowledge of basic principles of speech such as Aristotle’s Modes of Persuasion, his triangle of coherence, and techniques used by professional speechwriters will help when making speeches and when negotiating with other delegates. Drama can inform MUN participants through the rules and practices of role-playing games and simulations, since MUN is essentially a live role-playing (LRP) game. Debate can help MUN participants through knowledge of logic and fallacies of logic. Finally, knowledge of good practices and ineffective practices in the field of negotiation can help MUN participants. This paper gives introductory explanations of how the fields of speech, drama, debate, and negotiation can inform MUN practitioners.

2018  Conducting Research on Performance-Assisted Learning  単著
Mask & Gavel: Publication of the Speech, Drama, & Debate SIG  , JALT Speech, Drama, & Debate SIG  , 7  , 6-26  , 2018/12

概要(Abstract) Teachers who include performance activities in their course syllabus may find it difficult to convince administrators and other teachers of the value of its use, and one of the reasons is a lack of research data on the efficacy of performance use in teaching. This article proposes that practitioners of Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL) conduct micro-evaluations of the PAL activities that they do in class. The aggregation of such evaluations will form a macro-evaluation of PAL and may provide support for the use of PAL. The micro-evaluations would be based on the Ellis (1997) article on task evaluation which is described in detail in this article.

2018  Performance-Assisted Learning: A Proposal  単著
Mask & Gavel: Publication of the Speech, Drama, & Debate SIG  , JALT Speech, Drama, & Debate SIG  , 6/1  , 30-36  , 2018/05

概要(Abstract) Speech as a performance activity is accepted by English teachers and administrators, and speech
performances are done in classes as well as at contests. Formal debate is accepted by teachers, but
not taught so often in classes because of a perception that it requires special expertise on the part of
the teacher, and that it is too complex and difficult a task for most students. Other performance
activities, such as drama, dance, and music, receive less acceptance and support for a variety of
reasons. This paper discusses the acceptance of performance in courses, explains the concept of
Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL), and gives examples of what PAL would look like.

2019  Spread the Light: Showcasing Students’ Work  共同  2020/02/02
JALT Hokkaido 2020 Winter Language Teaching Conference/2nd Annual Performance in Education SIG in Sapporo Conference  , Japan Association for Language Teaching Hokkaido Chapter/Performance in Education SIG/Okinawa Chapter

概要(Abstract) Projects in class that motivate our students and let them express themselves often lead to some truly valuable and meaningful work (Ford & Kluge, 2015). However, this work rarely reaches audiences outside of the classroom and are too often left in the dark. Having students share their accomplishments with wider audiences through “outside” performance is a necessary step for what Newmann and Wehlage (1995, p. 14) call “authentic pedagogy.” Such high stakes performances are motivating and beneficial to students’ growth. However, opportunities to perform on the real-world stage are lacking or difficult to find, especially for EFL language learners. This presentation will briefly report on the trial run of a student showcase and exhibition event held at an international education conference and will explore some future and upcoming events in which second language learners can participate and share their work outside their classrooms and institutions. The presenters will offer suggestions for preparing and encouraging students to participate in such events, followed by discussion.

2019  Living Newspaper Readers Theatre  単独  2020/02/02
JALT Hokkaido 2020 Winter Language Teaching Conference/2nd Annual Performance in Education SIG in Sapporo Conference  , Japan Association for Language Teaching Hokkaido Chapter/Performance in Education SIG

概要(Abstract) Living Newspaper Theatre was an early 20th century development in the USSR to disseminate news through drama. It was also used in the 1930s in the US through the Works Progress Administration program of the Federal Theater. Readers Theatre is like theatre except the actors have a script in hand and perform facing the audience. Putting the two genres together results in opportunities for students to practice speaking with nonverbal communication and also practice creative writing skills. This workshop will teach how to do Living Newspaper Readers Theatre and will practice a piece that will be performed right after the workshop.

備考(Remarks)

2019  Living Newspaper Readers Theatre: A 4-skills Project  単独  2019/12/07
2nd Nanzan Language Education Symposium  , Nanzan University, Foreign Language Education Center-English Division

概要(Abstract) Living Newspaper Readers Theatre is a term and an activity created by the presenter that joins two performance forms together into one project. Living Newspaper is an early 20th century drama form that employs current events as its subject matter. Readers Theatre is a performance form similar to drama that allows the participants to read from a script. Living Newspaper Readers Theatre takes news articles and weaves them into a performance piece that students read from a script. The teacher could create the script or have the students write it. This workshop will introduce Living Newspaper Readers Theatre and explain its main principles. Participants will then rehearse and perform a short Living Newspaper Readers Theatre piece. The workshop will end with time for discussion/reflection/Q&A.

2019  Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL): Transforming Performance-Assisted Learning Theory into Pedagogy  共同  2019/11/03
JALT2019 45th Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational Materials Exhibition, Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center (Granship) Shizuoka   , Japan Association for Language Teaching

概要(Abstract) The Performance in Education SIG forum will focus on
Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL), which involves the implementation of micro-activities of performance with the purpose of consolidating learning. The lack of research in this field keeps PAL from being implemented more widely in both language and content classes. I talk about transforming PIE theory into pedagogy. The forum aims at introducing various research projects that explore how performances can be used in the classroom to foster and consolidate learning.

備考(Remarks)

2019  Research on Performance in Education: Interim News  共同  2019/11/02
JALT2019 45th Annual International Conference on Language Teaching and Learning & Educational Materials Exhibition, Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center (Granship) Shizuoka   , Japan Association for Language Teaching

概要(Abstract) At the Speech, Drama, & Debate Forum, JALT2018, the formation of a research group to investigate student attitudes, task accomplishment, and language learning was introduced. This presentation will be an interim report on the status of the research, including both progress and problems. The presentation will include the basis of the research, the scope of the research, some interim results, and will finish with a discussion of future research. Audience participation is encouraged.

2019  Process Drama: Adding Value to Role-plays  単独  2019/07/20
JALT Okayama Chapter Regular Meeting  , JALT Okayama Chapter

概要(Abstract) Performance in Education (PiE), also known as Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL) or Performance Across the Curriculum (PAC) is using any type of performance to learn, consolidate, and evaluate learning of content. This workshop will first introduce PiE and the concepts and practice of Process Drama (PD), then demonstrate PD as a whole group activity, and next have small groups try the activity, and finally have a discussion of the concepts of PD and PiE.

2019  Featured Talk: Performance-Assisted Learning: An Alternative for Performance in Education  単独  2019/06/23
2019 OKINAWA JALT Summer Language Teaching Symposium/ 4th Annual Speech, Drama, & Debate in Okinawa Conference  , Japan Association for Language Teaching Performance in Education SIG/Okinawa Chapter

概要(Abstract) William Shakespeare wrote, “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players” (As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII). Performance-Assisted Learning takes the quote to heart and applies it to learning. Performance-Assisted Learning (PAL) and Performance-Based Learning are two key concepts in Performance in
Education (PIE). I will first define PIE and demonstrate its value to education. The presenter will then explore the differences between PAL and Performance-Based Learning. Next, I will discuss the various activities in PAL and how to use them in various disciplines. I will then propose a nation-wide research project for PAL based on Ellis (1997), which is the basis of the Saturday Plenary talk by Rod Ellis. Finally, I will end by taking questions and comments from the audience.

備考(Remarks)

2019  Promoting Critical Thinking and Creativity with Living Newspaper Readers Theatre  単独  2019/06/22
2019 OKINAWA JALT Summer Language Teaching Symposium/ 4th Annual Speech, Drama, & Debate in Okinawa Conference  , Japan Association for Language Teaching Performance in Education SIG/Okinawa Chapter

概要(Abstract) Living Newspaper Readers Theatre is a new term for an old concept based on the Living Theatre movement from
the Soviet Union in the 1920s and the U.S. Federal Theater Project of the 1930s. The original term meant turning current events into theatre performances. Living Newspaper Readers Theatre involves putting together several newspaper articles to create a dramatic performance script. Performers hold the script in hand as they dramatically perform the piece while facing the audience. Critical Thinking is used when selecting newspaper articles to use, and creativity is promoted by creating the script and creating the performance. In this workshop I will first describe Living Newspaper Readers Theatre, give an example, then take participants through the steps to creating a script, culminating in a Living Newspaper Readers Theatre performance. I will end the workshop with a discussion of the value of using Living Newspaper Readers Theatre.

備考(Remarks)

2019  Performance in Education SIG (formerly SDD SIG) Forum  共同  2019/06/22
2019 OKINAWA JALT Summer Language Teaching Symposium/ 4th Annual Speech, Drama, & Debate in Okinawa Conference  , Japan Association for Language Teaching Performance in Education SIG/Okinawa Chapter

概要(Abstract) This forum will be a series of PechaKucha-like presentations (lightning presentations of 20 slides timed to
advance automatically every 20 seconds) by a group of performance practitioners from the SD&D SIG on the
role of Performance in Education, both Performance-Based Education (a form of project-based learning) and
Performance-Assisted Learning (a form of task-based learning). The team of presenters will also answer
questions and participate in a discussion. Interaction with the audience will be key to this presentation.
