Paralell Blogging: Explorations in Teacher and Learner Autonomy In order to teach autonomy, the teacher must exercise autonomy in his own learning. The teacher’s role should therefore extend beyond acting merely as a conduit for the learners’ own empowerment. As teachers, we should practice what we preach (Little, 1995). This chapter describes two blog projects: one a blog site created for university students to select, create, manipulate, and share content in English, outside of the class, without censorship and with limited guidance from a teacher. At the same time, the author sought to reflect on his own teaching through an online teacher development group. The chapter presents a commentary, in diary format, on the parallel projects as they ran from March to September 2009. A third section presents the data gathered through questionnaires administered to the participants and analysis of all blog posts and comments for the duration of the experiment. The relative success of the student blog project and the failure of the teacher blog bring to the fore issues of motivation and purpose. In particular, the author suggests conditions for the creation and maintenance of virtual communities for teacher development.
