備考(Remarks) The research follows a mixed research model comprising multiple case studies of individual learners in a variety of pedagogic contexts. The approach adopted includes the analysis of the ‘parallel’ world of learners’ exchanges in which they comment and interpret the teachings of the teacher―in most cases covertly―in first-year language classes. Previous research has shown that in grammar classes, learners create a parallel classroom and the exchanges are more conspicuous, whereas in communication classes, they resource to backchanneling, especially if the teacher forbids the use of Japanese. A key aspect to analyse is how different pedagogic contexts shape different possibilities for learners’ hidden inter-mental build-up so as to determine the contexts and pedagogical situations that best help learners’ language development.
