This study examined how expressed gratitude and apologies functioned as politeness strategies among 499 Japanese workers. In this online experimental research with 4 message conditions (control, gratitude, apologies, both) and 2 status conditions (lower/same), participants read a message from a hypothetical coworker and reported perceptions of face threats in the message, the coworker’s warmth, and their willingness to engage in prosocial behavior. Results indicated that expressed gratitude and apologies reduced face threats compared to no expressions. Further, path analysis showed that expressed gratitude indirectly affected perceptions of warmth through reduced face threats. Additionally, status differences influenced participants’ prosocial behavior.

Literature on expressed gratitude and apologies has predominantly focused on their effects within the realm of interpersonal relationships. However, it is crucial to extend the examination of these communication styles to work settings, where interpersonal dynamics significantly impact productivity. To address this, two experiments were conducted to compare the impacts of expressed gratitude and apologies among Japanese university students and company employees. The initial experiment, involving university students (n = 139), revealed that expressed gratitude heightened responsiveness and predicted outcome values in comparison to messages lacking either gratitude or apologies. The subsequent experiment, encompassing company employees (n = 499), unveiled that the effects of messages varied based on the relative statuses of the message sender.

Research has indicated the critical role of responsiveness in facilitating close relationships, but what communication leads to enhanced responsiveness has not been fully explored. We hypothesized that gratitude and apologies facilitate responsiveness within friendship relationships in Japan. In Experiment 1 (n = 669), receiving gratitude, apologies, or both gratitude and apologies increased recipients’ perceptions of the expresser’s responsiveness more than receiving a message without either gratitude or apologies. In Experiment 2 (n = 139), the participants who received gratitude as well as receiving both gratitude and apologies (but not just apologies) wrote more responsive messages back to the expresser than those who received a message without either gratitude or apologies. Gratitude and apologies played unique roles in promoting responsiveness within friendship relationships.

This study investigates how international students' identification with various social groups to which they belong influences their (mal)adjustment to the host country. One hundred and forty-three international students were asked to report their identification with people from their home country, international students, and foreign people, as well as their perceived discrimination, homesickness, and loneliness. The results revealed more harmful effects of group identification than protective effects. Identification with people from their home country was positively associated with homesickness, but slightly buffered the harmful effect of discrimination on loneliness. Identification with international students was negatively associated with loneliness, but strengthened the harmful effect of discrimination on homesickness. Identification with foreign people was positively associated with discrimination and loneliness and also strengthened the harmful effect of discrimination on homesickness and loneliness.

In Japan, when a beneficiary receives benefits from a benefactor, it is not unusual for the beneficiary to use apologies to express gratitude. However, literature has not fully investigated how received gratitude and apologies impact Japanese benefactors’ perceptions. This experimental study examined how received gratitude and apologies influenced 671 Japanese participants’ (benefactors) negative and positive face as well as their self-efficacy. The results showed that the participants who received a message with gratitude or both gratitude and apologies perceived that their negative and positive face were less threatened than those in a control condition. Contrary to literature, those who received gratitude did not have high levels of self-efficacy. However, their self-efficacy was high after they received apologies only when they put more effort into helping a beneficiary. This study revealed unique roles of gratitude and apologies in meeting various psychological needs of Japanese.

  • Is “thank you” effective even in Japan where “sorry” may be preferred? Toward extending the Find-Remind-and-Bind Theory 査読

The core idea of the find-remind-and-bind theory articulated by (Algoe, 2012, Social and Personality Psychology Compass, 6, 455) is that receiving expressed gratitude facilitates positive attitudes toward the expressor such as increased prosocial behaviour. The current study tries to observe the phenomena in Japan where apologies are sometimes used when people express gratitude. In this experimental study, 671 Japanese participants received expressions of gratitude, apologies, both, or neither (control condition) in exchange for their help. The results showed that expressed gratitude had the most positive effect compared to the control, apology and both conditions; that is, expressed gratitude most strongly facilitated the message receiver's prosocial behaviour, self-disclosure, predicted outcome values, and social worth. Expressed apologies showed a limited positive effect. A structural equation model further indicated that predicted outcome values and social worth functioned in unique ways to mediate the link between expressed gratitude and prosocial behaviour as well as self-disclosure.

This study first seeks to clarify the link between relational uncertainty and relationship satisfaction in romantic relationships (N = 353 dyads) using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. This study also investigates how self-disclosure could function as both a moderator and a mediator in the model. Self-report data revealed that participants’ relational uncertainty was negatively associated with their own relationship satisfaction. Whereas only women’s partner uncertainty was related to their male partner’s relationship satisfaction, all three sources of men’s relational uncertainty were related to their female partner’s relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, self-disclosure functioned in various ways as a moderator and a mediator in the models.

  • Are one’s attachment avoidance toward a particular person and his/her placement of this particular person in the attachment hierarchy inversely overlapping? Four bifactor-analysis studies 査読

Do one’s hierarchical preference for attachment support from a particular person over other people (attachment hierarchy) and his/her discomfort with closeness and uneasiness about being dependent on that particular person (attachment avoidance) inversely overlap? These two constructs have been distinctly conceptualized. Attachment hierarchy has been regarded as a normative characteristic of attachment relationships, while attachment avoidance has been considered to reflect an individual difference of relationship quality. Employing bifactor analyses, we demonstrated a unidimensional general factor of these two concepts in four studies exploring Czech young adults’ relationships with mother, father, friends, and romantic partner (Study 1); U.S. young adults’ relationships with a romantic partner (Study 2); Czech adolescents’ relationships with mother, father, and friends (Study 3); and Japanese young adults’ relationships with mother, father, and romantic partner (Study 4). These convergent results provide the replicable and generalizable evidence that one’s attachment avoidance toward a particular person and her/his placement of that particular person in the attachment hierarchy are inversely overlapping.

  • What helps international students disclose themselves and be assertive to host nationals for their cultural adjustment? Focusing on language ability and length of stay. 査読

Previous studies suggest that international students’ self-disclosure and assertiveness to host nationals play significant roles in their cultural adjustment. However, what specific factor helps them disclose themselves and be assertive has not been fully researched. Using culture learning theory, this study hypothesized that ability in the host country’s language (i.e., Japanese) and length of stay in a host country (i.e., Japan) are associated with these two forms of communication. Results indicated that language ability and length of stay were positively associated with levels of self-disclosure. A structural equation model further showed that length of stay was indirectly linked to levels of self-disclosure through Japanese fluency. Surprisingly, international students who stayed for a longer period in Japan with higher levels of Japanese were not more assertive than those who stayed for a shorter period with lower levels of Japanese. This study also investigated differences in the association among those variables between Asian international students and Western international students. These findings suggest that those who try to adjust to a new culture should be aware that what is considered an appropriate communication style varies depending on the host culture.

Intergroup contact theory suggests that developing a close relationship with outgroup members ameliorates the negative impact of prejudice that individuals perceive from outgroup members. This article specifically investigates the moderating role of cross-ethnic self-disclosure in the link between international students’ perceived ethnic/racial prejudice and depression as well as loneliness. One hundred and forty-three international students in Japan were asked to rate their perceived prejudice, depression, and loneliness as well as their self-disclosure to host nationals. The results showed that self-disclosure buffers the negative effects of prejudice on depression and loneliness such that international students who were more likely to disclose themselves to host nationals were less likely to be influenced by prejudice. Theoretical and practical contributions are considered.

An experimental study was conducted to analyse if perceived concordance on intergroup contact and culture maintenance might influence the attitudes and behavioural investment of international students toward the majority members. The mediating role of metastereotypes and some intercultural communication factors (self-disclosure, contact avoidance, and certainty) were investigated. The participants were 114 international students in Italy (mean age = 22.83), who were categorized into different levels of concordance with respect to culture maintenance and intercultural contact. Our findings showed that perceived concordance with respect to culture maintenance influenced international students’ desire for contact with majority members. Conflict avoidance mediated the relationship between concordance with respect to culture maintenance and behavioural investment. No other mediational relationships were statistically significant. This research is one of a small number of studies examining how concordance of acculturation preferences can influence the intergroup attitudes and intentions of international students. Specifically, the most positive outcomes were produced when majority members were perceived as sharing ideas concerning culture maintenance with international students. Interventions that aim to improve majority–minority relations should consider not only the preferences of minority members with respect to acculturation, but also the way minority members perceive the expectations of majority members and, more notably, the interplay between preferences and perceptions.

This study examines relationship-specific rumination (RSR) as a key cognitive factor corresponding with relational uncertainty (RU) in romantic relationships to extend the relational uncertainty model (Knobloch, 2007). Actor-partner interdependence models were employed to investigate the impact of RSR not only on the ruminators’ own uncertainty, but also on their partner’s uncertainty. One hundred and twenty dating couples completed self-report measures examining their relationship, self, and partner uncertainty as well as RSR. Results revealed that RSR was associated with the ruminators’ own relationship and partner uncertainty as well as their partner’s relationship and self uncertainty. The discussion highlights the theoretical implications of these findings for extending the relational uncertainty model.

Stigma associated with schizophrenia has been found to negatively impact the communication a schizophrenic individual has with others in face-to-face interactions, but the negative effect on computer-mediated communication has not been fully explored. Four hundred and fourteen participants interacted with a hypothetical target on Facebook, who was believed to have either depression, schizophrenia, or a cavity(i.e., the control group). Results indicated that participants rejected the target labeled as schizophrenic more than the targets without mental illness or labeled as depressive. The mental illness stigma effect on rejection was partially mediated by a low predicted outcome value attached to the schizophrenic target. Further, the target with schizophrenia received more rejecting messages than accepting messages. However, there was not a significant difference between the frequency of rejecting messages and that of the accepting messages the depressed target received. Theoretical and practical contributions were considered.

This article examines mental illness stigma effects on a request for a favor from a mentally ill individual. Four hundred and fourteen participants interacted with a hypothetical target on Facebook who was believed to have schizophrenia, depression, or a tooth cavity (i.e., the control group). Participants were asked to rate the favor request in terms of face threat, in addition to writing a response, which was then coded using message design logics. Results indicated that a request by a schizophrenic target threatened participants’ positive face more significantly than that of a target with depression or without any mental illness. Participants’ responses to the schizophrenic target were more likely to be conventional messages, whereas responses to the depressed target were more likely to be rhetorical messages. Theoretical and practical contributions are considered.

This research examines how people communicate to verify their self-concept in romantic relationships, using Self-Verification Theory advocated by William B. Swann Jr. Sixty-two couples filled out questionnaires assessing self-esteem, evaluation of partners, perceived feedback from partners, and communication style including self-disclosure and feedback. Results showed that increases in positive evaluations and positive perceptions of feedback from partners corresponded to increases in relational closeness. In cases in which there was a consistency between valences of self-esteem and evaluation from partners, communication functioned to verify participants’ self-concepts. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

    博士論文

Stigmas associated with depression and schizophrenia have been found to negatively impact the communication those with mental illness have with others in faceto-face interactions (e.g., Lysaker, Roe, &Yanos, 2007; Nicholson & Sacco, 1999). This study attempted to specifically examine how stigma affects cognitions, emotions, and behaviors of interactantswithout a mental illness toward those with a mental illness in online interactions. In this experimental study, 412 participants interacted with a hypothetical target on Facebook, who was believed to have depression, schizophrenia, or a cavity (i.e., the control group). They were asked to read a profile of the target on Facebook, respond to a message from the target, and complete measurements assessing perceived positive and negative face threats in the target’s message, perceived facial expressions of the target, induced affect, predicted outcome value, and rejecting attitudes towards the target. Results revealed that the target labeled as schizophrenic was rejected more and perceived to have lower outcome value than the target without a mental illness or labeled as depressive. However, there were no significant differences in any outcomes between the depression and control groups. The mixed results were discussed in relation to methodological limitations and possible modifications of previous theoretical arguments. Theoretical and practical contributions were considered and suggestions for future research were offered.

The purposes of this study were to: a) investigate the influence of marriage plans on relationship quality and confirming communication in the romantic relationships of emerging adults, b) analyze the role of confirmation as a mechanism explaining the relationship between marriage plans and relationship quality, and c) examine the influence of plans to marry on individuals’ desire for positive evaluation or self-verification evaluation. As expected, those with plans to marry reported higher relationship quality and more confirming communication than did those without plans. Further, the relationship between marriage plans and relationship quality was partially mediated by confirmation. However, the findings suggested that the marriage plans did not affect people’s desire for evaluation from their partner. Although, counter to expectations, dating partners with plans to marry did not have a desire for self-verifying evaluation, they perceive that they received more confirmation from their partner than those without plans, which lead to higher relationship quality.

This entry not only offers various conceptualizations of mental illness stigma mainly based on theoretical ideas developed by Corrigan and Kleinlein, but also delineates how mental illness stigma influences communication by those with and without mental illness. Public stigma refers to the reaction that the general public has to individuals with mental illness. Specifically, negative stereotypes about mentally ill individuals cause people to evaluate those with mental illness negatively and that negative evaluation leads to discrimination. Self-stigma refers to the internalization of negative stereotypes within stigmatized individuals. Those with mental illness also have negative stereotypes about mentally ill people, so when they endorse the stereotypes, self-discrimination occurs. The two types of mental illness stigma impact face-to-face and online communication by those with mental illness and people they come into contact with. Even though mental illness stigma discourages mentally ill individuals from disclosing their illness, when they do, positive consequences such as improved well-being could follow. However, the effectiveness of the disclosure depends on to whom they disclose and how they disclose. Limitations and future directions of this area of research are considered.

Previous studies have found that individuals with various health issues use social media for various purposes. Social media help them obtain support from other users and manage identity. However, past research also pointed out risks and challenges associated with the use of social media by those with health issues. One of the risks is stigmatization they could experience when using social media. Even though previous studies revealed serious issues related to stigma in face-to-face settings, the negative effects of stigmatization on social media are left unexplored. To facilitate research on the issues, first, this chapter reviews past works focusing on the use of social media by those with various health issues. Next, previous studies on stigma associated with these illnesses and disabilities are reviewed. Finally, this chapter proposes future directions of research on the issues.

Previous studies have found that the use of social networking sites (SNSs) is associated with the user’s positive outcomes such as perceived social support and psychological well-being (Ellison, Stein eld, & Lampe, 2007; Nabi, Prestin, & So, 2012). To seek those positive in uences, those with health issues such as physical illness or mental illness actively use SNSs (e.g., Shpigelman & Gill, 2014a; Gowen, Deschaine, Gruttadara, & Markey, 2012). The rst aim of this chapter is to describe previous studies on the use of SNSs by those with health issues such as mental illnesses, HIV/AIDS, cancer, intellectual disabilities, and diabetes. The second aim is to propose a new direction of research on the use of SNSs by those with health issues: the impact of stigma on communication on SNSs.

  • Relational Uncertainty and Relationship Satisfaction in a Romantic Relationship: Exploring Buffering Effects of Self-disclosure

    National Communication Association  2019年11月

     詳細を見る

This study first seeks to clarify the link between relational uncertainty and relationship satisfaction in a romantic relationship. This study also investigates potential boundary conditions (i.e., moderators) that can exacerbate or alleviate the negative impact of relational uncertainty by exploring a possible buffering role of self-disclosure that could mitigate the negative effect of relational uncertainty on relationship satisfaction. Self-report data from 706 romantic partners (N =353 dyads) revealed that participants’ relational uncertainty was negatively associated with their own relationship satisfaction. Whereas only women’s partner uncertainty was related to their male partner’s relationship satisfaction, all three sources of men’s relational uncertainty were related to their female partner’s relationship satisfaction, implying women’s vulnerability to their partner’s uncertainty. Furthermore, women’s self-disclosure functioned as a buffer to alleviate the negative effect of their male partner’s self uncertainty on the women’s relationship satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications are considered.
