2024  A Comparative Content Analysis of Gender Representation in Graded Readers: Characters and Occupations  共同  2024/09/07

概要(Abstract) This session presented partial results of a collaborative, two-pronged exploration of gender representation in English graded readers, which are frequently used for Extensive Reading (ER).
The researchers, Elliott & Bieri, examined and coded the visual and textual content of two sets of graded readers, one of narrative fiction and one of non-fiction. Our research used content analysis to build a description of each set of readers, which were selected with respect to relevance in our teaching context. The narrative fiction readers were selected on the basis of being the 30 most often borrowed titles from the library of the university where we both are employed. In addition to their popularity, these 30 readers represent the approximate volume of a first-year student's required extensive reading at our university. The non-fiction readers were selected to be of a similar volume, but readers focused on work and business were chosen since one of the researchers teaches courses related to English for business purposes. The session focused on the visibility of male and female characters and the gendered representation of occupations for characters in the readers.
