Research Topic
長期研究  Positive and Negative Outcome in Creative Project-Based Learning

概要(Abstract) Project-Based Learning (or PBL), a student-centered teaching approach which uses extensive projects in the classroom, is defined in this paper. The concept of Creative PBL is developed, and two projects are then described, a film-making project and an oral interpretation project. The positive and negative outcomes of the projects are enumerated, with suggestions on how to alleviate the negatives, and it was found that although negative outcomes such as students wasting time and difficulty of assessment were found, the increased, creativity, motivation, and leadership outweigh the negatives.

2016  English Workshop

This course utilised a Project-Based Learning approach. Student projects in this workshop were based on the theme of “music videos”. Students watched, discussed, analysed, and interpreted music videos and song lyrics in class. Then, in their group project, students chose a song in English, interpreted the lyrics, recorded their own version, and created a music video for it. Students practiced all four skills in English – reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

2013  Exploring English Accents: A Content-Based English Course

Developed curriculum documents and materials for an English phonology course. Students exercise their ears and expand their awareness and understanding of English phonology by examining a variety of English accents spoken all over the world. Students use the IPA and explore basic concepts in phonology and phonetics to compare various accents. Activities include listening, analyzing, and transcribing authentic speech samples to identify variations in consonant and vowel sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation. Students are given the opportunity to use this knowledge to reflect on their own pronunciation of English through discussions and practices.

2013  Cross-Cultural Explorations: Issues: A Content-based English Course

Developed curriculum documents and materials for a hybrid Communication/Cultural studies course and English Language course. Students expand on the concept of cultural identity by exploring issues in intercultural communication. Topics include issues such as stereotypes and prejudice against gender, race/ethnicity, class, and sexuality. Students explore these topics through listening, watching, and reading about experiences from around the world, in-class discussions, projects, and surveys.

2012  Intro to Film: A Content-Based English Course

Developed Curriculum Documents and Materials for a hybrid English Language and Film Studies course . Students use their English skills while learning about various aspects of film. Students also explore the basics in the process of filmmaking such as story writing, scriptwriting, film production/planning, shooting, editing, and acting. Students practice the 4 skills in English – reading, writing, listening, and speaking through class projects including watching short films, completing a film critique report, and creating a film of their own.

2012  Intro to Drama: A Content-Based English Course

Developed curriculum documents and materials for a hybrid English language and Drama course. Students use their English skills while exploring basic concepts in Drama and Acting. Students learn and practice controlling and communicating character, emotions, and words as actors and actresses, meanwhile practicing the 4 skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking by analyzing and performing scenes and dialogues from short-plays, films, and TV scripts.

2011  Cross-Cultural Explorations: Identity: A Content-based English Course

Developed curriculum documents and materials for a hybrid Communication/Cultural studies course and English Language course. Students use their English skills to learn about and discuss the concepts of personal and cultural identity, including topics such as values, customs, body language, communication style, and gender roles. Students explore these aspects by listening, watching, and reading about cultures around the world and discussing and comparing them to Japanese culture through reports and in-class discussions.

2008  Online Pronunciation Tutor Training Module

An online teacher training module developed for the Ohio Program of Intensive English. The module was developed and used to train teachers and tutors in the Ohio Program of Intensive English Pronunciation Labs. Each chapter includes background and linguistic information about the target, teaching methods, common student problems, and ideas for activities. Many of these activities are illustrated through interactive quizzes and games.
