2018  English Is No Longer the Lingua Franca of Business on the Internet  未設定
アカデミア文学  , Nanzan University  , 105  , pp. 127-139  , 2019/01

概要(Abstract) Since the invention of the Internet, the free flow of information and ideas from various cultures throughout the world has increased. A common language for access to the information and ideas has been a significant issue that has greatly attracted the attention of policy makers from various sectors of the world economy. In the past decades, English has been considered a Lingua Franca due to wide usage by non-native speakers. Use of English has been so widespread that some minority languages have faced danger of extinction. A number of international companies have had to change languages of their websites from the native language to English in order to continue thriving in the world of business. However, with globalization, increased usage of Internet and impact of social media on business transactions in multicultural nations, the position held by English has been jeopardized. It is believed that in the next forty years, other great world languages such as Chinese, Spanish, French, and Arabic will gain complete dominance in world business transactions. The present research aims at evaluating evidence to determine whether English is losing ground as the Lingua Franca of business on the Internet.
Keywords: Internet technology, English, lingua franca, world business, multicultural languages.

2017  Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Japanese University Business EFL Classes: A Perfect Fit?  未設定
Nanzan Management Review  , 南山大学  , Vol.32/3  , pp. 283-290  , 2018/03

概要(Abstract) The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Technology (MEXT) has consistently pursued the use of CLIL in Japanese academic institutions with the objective of making Japanese students more marketable. This is a concept that Japan borrowed after its first description and application in Europe in the 1990s. CLIL differs from the traditional teaching of foreign languages as separate subjects and instead focuses on the use of the foreign languages to teach other subjects. Being that professions in Business are fiercely competed, the use of CLIL for EFL Business Classes in Japanese Universities helps in improving Japanese’s students’ international outlook. That means that it complements their performances by helping them to improve their mastery of the English language. It also improves their understanding of the global concepts that are covered in class.

2017  Language and Social Media: Challenges for Research and Teaching Linguistics  未設定
アカデミア文学  , 南山大学  , 語学編第103号  , 2018/02

概要(Abstract) Social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Gmail and Flickr are increasingly becoming the preferred tools of communication. Researchers estimate that users spend more than 13 hours every week communicating over social media platforms. Through social media, users are able to create content, share information, access news, interact and connect with others in an efficient manner. People who share similar needs and interests easily meet on social media platforms, which provide them with an opportunity of discussing issues of mutual concern. Social media contributes to both professional and personal development. The kind of language used in social media interactions is a reminder that knowledge is dynamic. More researchers are demonstrating interest on the role of social media in social development within the contemporary society. The main area of concern is the impact of user-generated content (UGC) on formal use of language. The impact of social media communications on the methods and models of teaching linguistics is another area of scientific concern. The informal nature of social media communications challenges formal linguistic expression of news, professional reports and research articles. Notably problems related to social media communication are connected with the extraction and understanding of UGC. The current research seeks to explore the use of language in social media communications and its impact on research methods in linguistics. In addition, the research indicates the implication of social media communication for the practice of teaching linguistics.

2010  Language Frequency and Japanese Pronunciation of English  単著
Journal of Tourism Studies  , Toyo University  , 9  , pp. 151-160  , 2010/04/01

2017  TOEIC Focused Activities  未設定  2017/12
First Annual Nanzan Language Education Seminar  , 南山大学外国語教育センター

概要(Abstract) Most TOEIC textbooks are dry and boring. This presentation offers teachers some "out of the box" activities that can supplement any TOEIC learning textbook. The activities themselves are fun and are designed to be used in conjunction with a textbook. The ultimate goal of these activities is to help motivate students and to give them a refreshing break form the dry textbooks out on the market today.

2013  Alternative Approaches to TOEIC Preparation  単独  2013/02/27
CamTESOL Conference on English Language Teaching  , CamTESOL

概要(Abstract) In a world where globalization and multinational are the buzzwords governments are keen to encourage free trade. University graduates however are becoming disillusioned as they find it more competitive to secure jobs. Multinationals need local hires to expand their brand image. When hiring, the perception that the job applicant has the ability to communicate in English is essential. Ahead of securing an interview, a multinational will often filter applicants by their TOEIC score. While an applicant may have high level English conversation skills, without a good TOEIC score they may never get an interview. As unfair as it may seem, a high TOEIC score can make or break a job seeker's chances. The focus of this workshop is to present a fun, alternative method of TOEIC preparation with the goal of increasing the test takers score. A high TOEIC score will empower and authorize the recent (or soon to be) graduate and give him/her a much needed advantage in today's competitive job market.

2012  Media and Theater in an EFL Setting  単独  2012/01/24
32nd Annual ThaiTESOL International Conference  , ThaiTESOL

概要(Abstract) This workshop presents a teaching unit from a Japanese university ESP curriculum that incorporates an element of role play and drama into the classroom. The unit is currently used in English for Tourism context but can easily be adapted to suit any number of situations.

The workshop discusses the theoretical and methodological justification for the unit and examines the benefits of incorporating role plays and drama in terms of language learning.

An easy to understand, step by step task-based approach to incorporating drama into the classroom is presented. It is a fun and interesting teaching unit that gets students mobile as they negotiate individual and group tasks, culminating in a group’s 5 minute original commercial presentation of a student-produced product. The final commercial presentation is also called “Showtime!”

2009  Media Muslims and Stereotypes  単独  2009/10/30
Toyo University Symposium on Diversity  , Toyo University School of Regional Development Studies

概要(Abstract) Societies are much messier than our theories of them. More dynamic than any simplified labels can convey. We undertook our fieldwork to “unpack” media images of Muslims and Islam by talking to Muslims about their perceptions of self. Our hypothesis was that such perceptions may well differ from the media portrayals.

The evidence presented in the fieldwork is drawn primarily from interviews conducted in the field, supplemented with extracts from relevant journals and newspaper articles. The methodological framework used emanates from the “actor oriented paradigm” and corresponds in many ways to the “Naturalistic Inquiry” outlined by Licoln and Guba (1995).
